Words and Merry Christmas

I love words, which is one of the reasons I write. I also write because I don’t know what I would be doing if I weren’t writing. I’d probably be writing.

We all know that words have two qualities: denotation and connotation. Denotation refers to the precise meaning of the word. Like house, a place people live. Connotation is the emotional sense it conveys. A house conveys solidity, safety, stability, and a bunch of more words.

There’s another thing about words, it’s what they do. They make people happy. Make them sad, Angry and so on. And context. A house in New York City means something other than a house on Mars.

When you are writing a story, your words have impact. If you put it in the past tense one thing, Present tense another, And point of view. Your words in first person draw the reader into the reader’s mind. Third person keeps you farther away, unless you write it in a way that feels like 1st person. And so on and so on.

Words also make people laugh. Trevor Noah said in a TV interview that he though people were at their most authentic when they are laughing. You can connect with readers when your words make them laugh. The main writer on the TV crime series, currently in reruns, says that they try to bring humor throughout each episode because it makes thing lighter and the drama easier to let into your selfness.

Now let me wish you all a joyous holiday season and a satisfying and profitable (financial and other) new year.
