Where Should I Write?

New writers often ask where is best to write.

Again, writing is not one size fits all. Find out where you are most comfortable and productive. Some people write in cafes. Others rent motel rooms and cut themselves off. Proust used to go the shore and tape newspapers up over the windows.

I like to write in my apartment early in the morning with the radio playing classical music. I can write elsewhere. When I went to Chile I wrote very well in the bedroom overlooking the street. When I was stuck in NYC over 9/11, I went to a Starbucks and wrote. That worked very nicely.

But what works for one person may not work for you. What works for Proust is not necessarily right for you unless you are productive that way.
