Where I’m at…

I have just finished off the draft of my new play, Checkmate. Reckoning in a transracial family, based loosely on events of my own life. After working on it for 9-10 months, submitting it to a contest and not having it accepted, working on it some more, until it thrills me and it’s good enough to go out and play with others.

Next step: rehearsals. Working together around the table until it’s the best it can be. Aiming for a public reading, then see where we go from there.

I have found four interested readers. Finding them the theatrical equivalent of grocery shopping. Now scheduling the same date that will work for each of them. This process can be more daunting even than casting. It’s worse than herding cats. It’s like herding cats that are herding cats.

James Baldwin said that writing is committing the dream to paper. Actually, he wrote that, though he must have said it, too. The dream thrills you, but when you write it down, it goes thud on the paper. Then you spend the rest of your time working on it until it thrills you again. I’ve gone through this and am at re-thrilling stage. More later. I am determined to be a more conscientious blogger.
