Alice on Writing

Alice, In Alice in Wonderland, says, to paraphrase from memory (which is always dangerous), “Start at the beginning, go through to the end, and then stop.” Lewis Carroll knew what he was talking about. No hemming and hawing, “The facts, Ma’am, just the facts.”

The reader is forgiven if he or she says, “Ok, and --?” After all, questions remain. When does the story start? Where should you start it? Who should tell it? How should he or she tell it? Is it true, fiction, or something (which it usually is) in between? When does the story end? What should you include in the middle?
